Professor Guoming Luan: Leading Expert in Functional Neurosurgery
Share
Academic and Professional Background
Professor Luan Guoming is a pioneer in functional neurosurgery in China. He began his neurosurgical career in 1982 and has since become a leading figure in the field. He holds a Doctorate in Neurosurgery from Capital Medical University and completed postdoctoral research at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He has held significant positions, including Director of the Functional Neurosurgery Department at Beijing Tiantan Hospital and Director of the Epilepsy Research Institute at Beijing Brain Institute. Currently, he serves as the Director of the Epilepsy Research Institute at Beijing Brain Institute and is a Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Capital Medical University Sanbo Brain Hospital.
Clinical Expertise and Innovations
Epilepsy Surgery
Professor Luan has performed over 6,000 neurosurgical procedures, with more than 4,000 focusing on epilepsy. His innovative "bipolar coagulation and thermal ablation of the cortical surface fibers" technique has been widely adopted in China and internationally. This method has achieved a control rate of over 95% and a cure rate of 70–80% in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)
In 1998, Professor Luan conducted China's first DBS surgery for Parkinson's disease at Beijing Tiantan Hospital. He later introduced the ROSA robotic stereotactic system for precise electrode placement in epilepsy surgery. His team also pioneered the application of DBS in treating chorea, achieving significant clinical outcomes.
Functional Neurosurgery
Professor Luan specializes in treating functional neurological disorders such as trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, intractable pain, cerebral palsy, and brainstem hypertension. He has developed surgical techniques for tumors located in eloquent brain areas, ensuring minimal neurological deficits.
Academic Contributions and Leadership
Professor Luan has published over 100 articles in national and international journals and has edited or contributed to more than 10 medical books. He has been involved in over 30 national and provincial research projects, focusing on epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and functional neurosurgery.
He holds leadership roles in several professional organizations, including:
- Vice Chairman of the China Association Against Epilepsy
- Chairman of the China Medical Doctor Association's Neurosurgical Functional and Stereotactic Neurosurgery Committee
- President of the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (WSSFN) China Chapter
- Director of the Epilepsy Research Institute at Beijing Brain Institute
Awards and Recognitions
Professor Luan has received numerous accolades, including:
- Special Government Allowance from the State Council of China
- Wang Zhongcheng China Neurosurgery Annual Award
- Beijing Science and Technology Progress Awards
- Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award
Educational and Training Initiatives
As a mentor, Professor Luan has supervised over 50 graduate students, including doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. He has organized more than 40 national and international training courses and academic conferences, such as the Sanbo International Neuroscience Forum and the National Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Conference, contributing to the advancement of neurosurgical education and practice.
