Peking University Tongren Hospital: A Leading Medical Institution Specializing in Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology

Peking University Tongren Hospital (also known as Beijing Tongren Hospital), established in 1886, is a large-scale comprehensive tertiary hospital specializing in ophthalmology and otolaryngology, which are both national key disciplines in China. The hospital operates in two locations: the Chongwenmen and Yizhuang campuses. Currently, the hospital employs over 3,900 staff members.

Tongren Hospital operates a comprehensive medical model, with its affiliated research institutions, including the Beijing Ophthalmic Research Institute, Beijing Otolaryngology Research Institute, and the Beijing Diabetes Research Institute. Together, they form the "One Hospital, Three Institutes" structure. The hospital serves as a hub for clinical services, education, research, prevention, and international exchange. The ophthalmology and otolaryngology departments are nationally recognized clinical key disciplines, while the allergy (nasal allergy) department is a national clinical key specialty. The hospital is also home to a nationally recognized traditional Chinese medicine department in ophthalmology.

The hospital boasts several national-level research platforms, including the National Engineering Technology Research Center and the National Engineering Research Center approved by the Ministry of Development and Reform. It also has 16 provincial and ministerial research platforms, including 2 engineering research centers from the Ministry of Education, 1 key laboratory, and numerous other local and national research institutions. Since 2012, the hospital has been awarded over 300 national research projects and 49 provincial and higher-level awards.

Tongren Hospital is the Fourth Clinical Medical School of Capital Medical University and serves as a training base for residency programs and clinical education. The hospital also leads the Beijing Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology Residency Training Program and has 17 doctoral and 28 master’s degree programs, with over 1,000 students currently in training.

The hospital has attracted some of the brightest minds in the field, including an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, an academician of the International Eurasian Academy, and an academician of the International Academy of Ophthalmology. It has also been home to multiple prestigious awards, such as the National Outstanding Youth Fund, among other accolades.

Tongren Hospital is a key member of the National Blindness Prevention and Hearing Loss Prevention Technical Guidance Groups and houses both the WHO Blindness Prevention and Hearing Loss Prevention Centers. It is a member of the International Eye Bank Association and operates the Beijing Tongren Eye Bank.
